Guidelines to make IITD events/programs accesssible

Office Of Accessible Education (OAE)

Have you determined if your event and venue meet the potential needs of persons with disabilities?

If not, review the accessibility checklist below and incorporate these in the events.

Checklist

Test your venue’s accessibility

1. Make sure the event is well lit, consider those who will be affected by strobe lights and dim lights, which can cause problems for those with vision impairments, epilepsy, and those on the spectrum.

2. Provide clear signage pointing directions and identifying locations.

3. Check if projection screens are visible from all seats.

4. Is there a path of travel that does not require use of stairs or navigating uneven terrain?

5. Is there adequate parking for persons with disabilities available close to the entrance?

6. If there are stairs at the main entrance is there an alternate route (lift, elevator, ramp) close by?

7. Are there accessible restrooms for Persons with Disabilities close to the event room?

8. Double Check the seating plan and location layout .

If the event includes a significant number of registered guests who are Persons with Disability, consider placing an “accessibility desk” by the entrance and inform the registered attendees that they may approach it if they encounter any problems.

Q. What do we do if we receive accommodation requests from those planning to attend an event?

A. Contact Office Of Accessible Education (OAE) for any assistance. We are located at Lecture Hall Complex (LHC), Ground Floor.

Also, check for all the other accessibility elements to be considered before organizing an event as mentioned below:

Entrance

1. Are there any physical barriers—steps, a threshold, etc.—at the entrance? If so, can someone in a wheelchair enter the building using a ramp or a lift?

2. Do the doors open wide enough for a wheelchair?

3. Can a person using a wheelchair open the doors?

4. Is the accessible route clear of obstacles if persons in wheelchairs want to enter through a different entrance?

5. Has security been made aware that entrances that are structurally accessible must be open if the event takes place after college hours?

6. If a lift is required to access the entry to the event venue, is the lift functioning.
